Licensing Debate: Community Awareness
Are there communities around the state where agents and buyers are asking for "certified inspectors"? Or does anyone care?

The home buying community isn’t asking for Certified Home Inspectors that I’m aware of. It’s not that the Virginia community doesn’t care, but more, the community is unaware. I get the same reaction when I tell people that home inspectors are not required to be licensed, or regulated at all, and that you don’t have to know anything about houses and their systems in order to be a home inspector in Virginia. They are surprised, some shocked. Most assume that we are a licensed profession. The public is totally unaware that we are an unregulated profession.
When you need the services of a doctor or lawyer, do you ask the receptionist, “Is she licensed?” No, you just assume that they are. It’s the same with our profession. People don’t ask, because they think that we are. When people order a Whopper with Cheese, they never ask if they come with meat.

I agree with Bob. I think most home buyers would be shocked at who can call themselves a h ome inspector.
